JEAN JULLIEN DESIGNS THE POSTER FOR ANIMA 2027!
For its 46th edition, Anima is thrilled to put its poster in the hands of Jean Jullien. True to his signature brushstroke and vivid colours, the illustrator gives us an image that is as endearing as it is expressive. It's impossible not to smile at this little dog, so determined to earn its place among the big players.
For the poster, I played on how close the words ANIMAL and ANIMATION (ANIMA, in other words) sound, and brought that parallel out through the imagery. On one level it's a visual play on words, on another it's a nod to painted animation and to the craftsmanship of the trade (which I love!). It's also the small studio (the dog) picking up the tool to dress up and measure itself against the big ones (big cats and big studios alike).
Jean Jullien (b. 1983) is a French artist who lives and works in Paris. Originally from Nantes, he graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2008 and from the Royal College of Art in 2010. His artistic output ranges from painting and illustration to installations, books, posters and clothing.
His work has been exhibited worldwide in both museums and galleries, and has been the subject of numerous publications and books. He has worked and collaborated with many renowned international brands.
In 2016 he launched the Korean brand Nounou with Jae Huh. In 2022 Phaidon Press published a first monograph on his work to coincide with his retrospective exhibition at the DDP Museum in Seoul. In 2023 his first institutional solo exhibition in Europe opened at MIMA in Brussels. That same year, Jean Jullien was invited to take part in the NGV Triennial at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne with an immersive installation. The artist continues to develop his sculptural work under the title ‘Paper People’. These pieces have been shown in Tokyo at Ginza Six and in Paris at Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche.
More recently, in 2025, in collaboration with the Tara Ocean Foundation, he created an installation for the French pavilion at Expo 2025, a World Expo held in Osaka. This was followed by a solo immersive exhibition at the Nanzuka Art Institute.
